American RiversAmerican Rivers is a national conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring America's river systems and to fostering a river stewardship ethic. 1025 Vermont Ave, NW, Suite 720 Charles River Watershed AssociationFormed in 1965, the Charles River Watershed Association is one of the oldest watershed organizations in the country, and has played a major role in the clean-up of the Charles River and watershed planning. Its mission is to protect and enhance the health, beauty, and enjoyment of the Charles River and its tributaries. Collaborative work with government officials and citizen groups from 35 watershed towns from Hopkinton to Boston has led to dramatic improvements in water quality and approaches to water resource management. 2391 Commonwealth Avenue Community RunningCommunity Running offers professional coaching in a non-competitive environment. Three coached workouts each week, year round, are geared for everybody -- regardless of age, experience or ability. Core membership is made up of "middle to back of the pack" runners who run for fun and fitness and often for a good cause. c/o CAMI Emerald Necklace ConservancyThe Emerald Necklace Conservancy is a public-private partnership formed to preserve, improve, promote, and maintain the parks in Boston and Brookline designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The Conservancy seeks to establish community commitment through advocacy and education, create and support maintenance plans that ensure the six parks are managed as a cohesive system, and provide private sector and individual support to augment limited municipal parks budgets for the Emerald Necklace system. 2 Brookline Place Esplanade AssociationA non profit collaboration of citizens working to protect, restore, and beautify Bostons historic Charles River Esplanade. The Esplanade Association Friends of Alewife Reservation (FAR)FAR is a non-profit volunteer organization, reflective of the community and dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Alewife Reservation through volunteer efforts and cooperation with the MDC and local officials. www.friendsofalewifereservation.org Friends of the Community PathThe Friends of the Community Path are a group of citizens who have adopted an exciting and important mission: To extend the well-loved Minuteman Bikeway/Linear Park -- the most-used path in the US! -- from its current ending at Cedar Street in Somerville to the Lechmere Square area. 112 Belmont St, #2 Friends of the Middlesex Fells ReservationThe all-volunteer Friends of the Middlesex Fells Reservation exist to protect and preserve the natural and historic resources of the Fells. The Friends conduct natural and cultural history programs and recreational hikes year round, offer community service projects, and conduct cleanups, trail work and special events. The Friends also advocate for the Fells with local conservation boards, and with government agencies and elected officials. They remain interested in the area of parklands between the Eliot and Western Avenue bridges. Inline Club of BostonThe Inline Club of Boston (ICB) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 that promotes and supports inline skating. The ICB has been the driving force behind organized recreational and competitive skating in New England. With a dedicated core of volunteers and an energetic membership, the ICB teaches people about inline skating, how to do it safely, and, most important, how to have fun. The ICB also provides its members with opportunities to skate together, participate on TeamICB and represents the interests of skaters in community affairs in the Greater Boston area. 781-932-5457 Inventing the Charles RiverWGBH Forum NetworkKarl Haglund, author of the book Inventing the Charles River and senior planner with the MDC, which is the steward of the Charles River parklands, gave a lecture sponsored by the Boston Athenaeum on May 20, 2003. To hear the lecture, click on the link below: streams.wgbh.org/forum/forum.php?lecture_id=1249 Massachusetts Association of Conservation CommissionsThe MACC provides support and training for Conservation Commission members and other interested groups. 10 Juniper Road Massachusetts Audubon SocietyThe Massachusetts Audubon Society is the largest conservation organization in New England, concentrating its efforts on protecting the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. The Society protects nearly 29,000 acres of conservation land, conducts nature education programs for over 175,000 schoolchildren annually, and advocates for sound environmental policies. Across the state, Massachusetts Audubon Society operates 41 wildlife sanctuaries that are open to the public and serve as the base for its conservation, education, and advocacy efforts. 208 South Great Road Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)Division of Urban Parks and Recreation (formerly the Metropolitan District Commission, or MDC)The DCR owns and manages the Charles River Basin. In 2001, the DCR published a master plan for restoration of the Parklands. Here is the Spring 2005 edition of Charles River News, the DCR newsletter. 251 Causeway Street Newton ConservatorsThe Newton Conservators is a citizens group that advocates for Newton's open spaces. Since their founding in 1961, they have helped preserve over 200 acres of open space and created several major parks for public enjoyment. The Trustees of ReservationsThe Trustees of Reservations is the nation's oldest private, statewide conservation and preservation organization. It was founded in 1891 by a small group of open space visionaries led by landscape architect Charles Eliot, a protege of Frederick Law Olmsted. Since then, it has protected over 34,000 acres of land in Massachusetts, including 89 public reservations representing many of the state's most scenic, ecologically rich, and historically important landscapes. 572 Essex Street Urban Parks InstituteThis initiative of the Project for Public Spaces was established in 1995 to promote innovation and encourage partnership organizations striving to restore, reclaim and revitalize urban parks. The Institute has evolved into a major resource center on urban parks -- for national and local nonprofit design, arts and educational organizations, city planning, parks and recreation departments, and community groups. Through conferences, workshops, technical assistance, and a interactive database-driven website, the Institute encourages leadership, partnerships, and creative problem solving among parks planners, cultural institutions, design professionals, and the communities they serve. 153 Waverly Place, 4th Floor Walk BostonWalk Boston promotes walking for transportation and recreation. Their mission is to create and preserve walkable, livable communities through education and advocacy. They offer an illustrated map for a walking tour of Boston and an advocacy handbook for Improving Pedestrian Access to Transit. Walk Boston has also created Metropolitan Boston Trails and Greenways Network, a collaboration of environmental and transportation groups.
