CHARLES RIVER PARKLANDS
UPDATE A Message From The President
On September 15th, just as this newsletter was going to final edits, the 1000th Conservancy Volunteer picked up a pair of loppers and helped clear brush on the Esplanade across from Boston University. When we launched the Conservancy Volunteers almost a year ago, we could only dream of such success. Now, 1000 pairs of well-used work gloves later, the Parklands look better than everall due to your willingness to contribute your time, your money or both to renewing the Charles River Parklands. Thank you. This issue of Parklands is dedicated to our volunteers, photos of whom will help you experience the pleasures of working along the river. Keep an eye out! Even if our volunteers are not at work, Britt Lundgren, the Conservancy's volunteer coordinator, is likely to be seen in the Conservancy's new truck. Stop by and say "Hi." If you can, volunteer yourself. It's a wonderful way to give back. You'll love it! While the Conservancy's volunteer program is crucial, especially in this time of reduced state resources, it is only a small part of everything the Conservancy is doing. We are:
Speaking of state government, please join me in welcoming Kathy Abbott, the new commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Thanks to some very generous local foundations and your incredible support we have been able to accomplish quite a bit this year, and for this we are enormously grateful. Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy the Parklands. Please take an hour or two to stroll along the Charles River. Watch the leaves turn, the water glitter and the children play. In a few weeks we will be contacting you to ask for your assistance in meeting some ambitious financial goals as we prepare for a decrease in foundation support. Please be generous. The stewardship and renewal of the Charles River Parklands are a legacy benefiting all ages and generations to come. Sincerely yours,
