CHARLES RIVER PARKLANDS
UPDATE Service LearningSchooling Students to Value the Parklands"Helping my community by picking up trash and cleaning the environment was an educational time for me," says Tony, a student in the Conservancy's Service Learning pilot program conducted in partnership with SummerBridge Cambridge. Meeting twice weekly for five weeks during the summer, these highly motivated eighth and ninth graders from Cambridge joined the Conservancy's Emily Twiss along the Charles to learn the basics of Parklands history and ecosystems. The youngsters identified and removed invasive species in Hell's Half Acre, and bent their backs without protest to pick up lots and lots of trash. Parklands activities helped reinforce lessons learned in the classroom. By the end of the program the Conservancy's first class of Service Learning students had learned that it's important to respect and restore the Parklands. Over the course of the coming year the Conservancy, through the support of The Boston Foundation, will be partnering with educators throughout Greater Boston to develop similar initiatives. Charles River Parklands is published by The Charles River Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of the Basin parklands of the Charles River.
