CRC's "Service Learning Initiative" Gains Foundation Support

The Charles River Conservancy has been honored with a grant for $20,000 from the Boston Foundation in support of our Service Learning Initiative in the Charles River Parklands.

While adults regularly participate in brush cutting and shoreline restoration efforts, "The opportunity to study and beautify the public parklands needs to be extended to more and more youth from neighborhoods across Greater Boston" said Evan Moss, the Conservancy's full time education and volunteer coordinator.

The Service Learning Initiative helps educators integrate the beautiful environment and historic greenspace of the publicly owned Charles River Parklands into their teaching activities. As a result, students learn good environmental and community values while gaining the satisfaction of community service.

The Service Learning program, which is entering its third year in Boston and Cambridge, is available to students in elementary through high school years. CRC staff works directly with teachers, creating a customized Parklands curriculum and hands on experience for students.

The Boston Foundation and the Conservancy are working together to realize the vision of the Charles River Parklands as "democracy's common ground," as well as a special learning opportunity for area students.

The Boston Foundation is one of the nation's oldest and largest community foundations, with an endowment of $648 million. The Boston Foundation also manages the Charles River Parklands Stewardship Fund.
