CHARLES  RIVER  PARKLANDS  UPDATE
September 2001
Archives—Table of Contents

UPDATE ON THE CHARLES RIVER BASIN PARKLANDS

As we move into fall, the Charles River Conservancy (CRC) is working on many fronts to increase access and improve the usage of the Charles River Basin Parklands. We are thrilled to bring you exciting news about a collaborative project we are working on to bring more people to the river parks. Also included in this newsletter are announcements of upcoming meetings and an update on Greenough Boulevard.

Plans for a Skatepark on the Charles

The CRC is working with the Charlestown Neighborhood Council, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and all the agencies involved with this site to promote plans to build a skatepark under I-93 in Charlestown on the Charles River, where the Charles and Miller's Rivers meet. This site is part of the New Basin where several mitigation projects are currently underway as part of the Central Artery Project.

If you know of any individuals or organizations who may have an interest in this skatepark project, please call the CRC office or email: crc@thecharles.org.

BU Sailing Pavilion Meeting

A public meeting will be hosted by the Charles River Watershed Association on Tuesday, October 9 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, to present and discuss an independent analysis of possible locations for BU's proposed sailing pavilion.

John Hancock Conference Center
Room 201, 40 Trinity Place, Boston
(across from John Hancock Tower and behind the University Club in the Back Bay)

Please attend this meeting to learn about the project and to support a fair and open review process for determining how public lands are used -- now and for generations to come.

Greenough Boulevard update

The MDC Master Plan proposal to close Greenough Boulevard to motor vehicles on Sundays was scheduled for a trial period, but the trial closing has been dropped for the foreseeable future due to community concerns and until further traffic information can be collected.

State Representatives Kevin Honan, Rachel Kaprielian and Alice Wolf and State Senator Steven Tolman suggested a public meeting later this fall to solicit community input (time and location to be announced).

The CRC will continue to advocate for restoration along Greenough Boulevard and plans on eventually revisiting the Sunday closing idea after sufficient studies of potential impacts can be completed. We welcome your comments on ways to improve Greenough Boulevard and the adjacent river parks. Please send your comments to the CRC office or email: crc@thecharles.org
