CHARLES RIVER PARKLANDS
UPDATE UPDATE ON THE CHARLES RIVER BASIN PARKLANDS Dear Parklands friends, Come and visit us this weekend, Saturday October 20 and Sunday October 21, at the Head of the Charles Regatta! We will have a booth at the finish line in Herter Park. Don't miss the special regatta edition of our Parklands Map on sale for only $20! The Charles River Conservancy is making great progress in our work to renew the Basin Parklands. Included in this October issue of our e-newsletter is an announcement for a public Greenough Boulevard meeting, an update on the status of Magazine Beach restorations, and an report on BU's proposal for a new sailing pavilion on the Charles. Greenough Boulevard -- Meeting to be held October 24 Senator Tolman and Representatives Kaprielian, Honan and Wolf have organized a community meeting for Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium of the Watertown Middle School to follow up on the many concerns that were voiced at the previous meeting in July. Please come and share your views for a renewed parkway and reclaimed greenspace. If you cannot attend, please make your views known and send an email to: Sen. Tolman: stolman@senate.state.ma.us And please copy your email
to the Charles River Conservancy: While we are no longer promoting a Sunday car-free space for Greenough Boulevard for the time being, we do need your help and ideas for ways to improve this stretch of parkland. In particular, you might have views on a round-about at the intersection of Grove Street and Greenough Boulevard, and lane reductions and park improvements inspired by Little Greenough Boulevard in Watertown. Questions? Call the CRC. Magazine Beach Restoration At a public meeting on September 25th, landscape architects presented the preliminary design for restoration work at Magazine Beach. One of the main concerns voiced at the meeting was pedestrian safety and crossing Memorial Drive. However, this is not a part of the contract between the City of Cambridge and the MDC, and will have to addressed by the State Police and the MDC. Lighting and fencing for the baseball field were also discussed, but this would be in conflict with creating parkland that serves many different constituencies. The meeting was attended by over 200 people, including several CRC members, and three focus groups were established: playing fields, public safety, and habitat/natural resources. Please contact Rick Corsi at the MDC if you want to comment on this project: CRBasin2001@yahoo.com. BU Sailing Pavilion Independent consultants presented 5 alternative sites for the proposed new Sailing Pavilion for BU at a public meeting on October 9th. For more information please contact the Charles River Watershed Association, the host of the meeting and fellow river watchdog, at www.charlesriver.org. Thanks for your interest and care for our riverbanks! Hope to see you at the Head of the Charles! Sincerely, Charles River Parklands is published by The Charles River Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of the Basin parklands of the Charles River.
