Program Spotlight

Skatepark update: Designer starts work
Renowned skatepark designer Zach Wormhoudt recently visited Boston where he met with Big Dig and DCR officials, attended an informational luncheon at Hale and Dorr, and led an interactive skatepark design meeting at the Boston Public Library. Among other things, the visit enabled Zach to meet local athletes and, through the use of clay modeling, understand their visions for the Charles River Skatepark. Click on the following link to learn more and read articles about the Charles River Skatepark.

The CRC would like to thank the Royal Sonesta Hotel for Zach's accommodations, Hale and Dorr for hosting the luncheon, and Eye Candy Cinema for filming the visit for incorporation in the Charles River Skatepark informational video.

Annual Appeal

For those of you who have already donated to the fall 2003 Annual Appeal, thank you, we greatly appreciate it. Your support is vital if the Charles River Conservancy is going to be able to continue the renewal and stewardship of the Charles River Parklands. If you have not yet donated, you can give by check, credit card or on line. Our mailing address is:

Education

Service Learning
The CRC is expanding its service learning program by working with public schools to develop opportunities for teachers to use the parklands as a hands-on classroom. Under the supervision of the CRC volunteer coordinator, youth can work in the parklands and learn about ecology, landscape design, local history and parklands stewardship while performing community service projects. For more information or to find out how to get involved, please call Britt Lundgren at the CRC or email bml@thecharles.org.

Advocacy

Graffiti
Twenty-five percent of survey respondents stated that they want murals to replace graffiti along the Charles River bridges, abutments and retaining walls... What do you think? Take the graffiti survey and let us know. Survey results will help guide graffiti clean-up efforts this spring.

Pathway survey
Results from our Dr. Paul Dudley White Pathway survey are now posted. To learn about the project and view results visit our pathways page.

Conservancy Volunteers

IIt's tree pruning time! From now until March, the Conservancy Volunteers will be pruning trees along the river. Come learn the art of pruning. No experience is necessary. For a list of upcoming events, visit the Conservancy's Volunteer Stewardship Program page. You can also set up a service day for your company or community group by contacting volunteer coordinator, Britt Lundgren at the CRC office or email bml@thecharles.org.

Last Minute Holiday Shopping

The Boston Globe bestseller, Inventing the Charles River, makes a great holiday gift. This 500-page book by Karl Haglund was published by MIT Press in collaboration with the CRC and includes over 450 images. Learn more about Inventing the Charles River or order the book on-line.

Design Meeting at BPLPicture of the Month

At the public design meeting at the Boston Public Library, young skateboarders explained their clay skatepark elements to professional skatepark designer Zach Wormhoudt as Charles River Conservancy President Renata von Tscharner looked on.

If you have a picture you'd like to submit for a future picture of the month, please contact us at crc@thecharles.org.
