Program Spotlight
RiverSing: Bridging the Charles with Voice and Light
At 6pm on Wednesday, September 22nd, join hundreds of singers at the Weeks Footbridge
to celebrate the passage from summer to fall. Under the artistic leadership of
the Revels, this event will include, among other things, reciprocal singing across
the water and the lighting of the Weeks Bridge. If you are a member of a choral
group, contact the revels at info@revels.org
for more information about getting involved. To learn more about the event or
to volunteer for the event, click
here.
Many thanks to Harvard University, the LEF Foundation and other supporters
whose generosity has enabled the permanent installation of architectural lighting
on the Weeks Bridge . . . after September 22nd the lights will stay
on!

Party to support the skatepark!
The Avalon, Eastern Boarder and the Charles River Conservancy are teaming up to
throw a big party in support of the Charles River Skatepark on Thursday, October
21st. More details will come next month, but for now we need volunteers and sponsors.
Interested? Email Noah Stockman at nes@thecharles.org.
Advocacy
The House and Senate have finished the official legislative sessions for the
year but will be meeting in informal sessions for the next few months. Although
several of the Governor's vetoes on programs we were hoping to see restored were
not overridden, we are pleased to see that many of our efforts were successful
in urging the legislature to protect key budget line items for environmental agencies
and their programs.
Budget veto overrides:
- Executive Office of Environmental Affairs - Administrative (2000-0100) - overrode
a veto of $100,000
- Urban Parks (2820-0100) - overrode a veto of $512,000
Thank you for your help by emailing, calling and writing.
Conservancy Volunteers
Charles River Conservancy welcomes Evan Moss as our new Volunteer Coordinator!
Evan, a native of western Massachusetts, holds a B.S. in Geography from the University
of Oregon. He has worked for the National Park Service in Oregon and Massachusetts,
and spent several years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala. Upon returning,
he moved to Boston, and has since spent many hours cycling along the banks of
the Charles. He is looking forward to working with you, whether you come as an
individual or as a part of the group. You can reach Evan at edm@thecharles.org.
Come out and volunteer!

Charles River Conservancy Moves to EF Education in Cambridge!
The CRC would like to thank EF Education for donating attractive office space
for the Conservancy. Thanks to EF's generosity, the Conservancy is now located
at One Education Street in Cambridge, near the Museum of Science and right next
to the future Charles River Skatepark! The Conservancy is very grateful to EF
for giving us office space and bringing us to the riverbanks!
Picture
of the Month
David Armstrong, former Mayor of Louisville, KY visited the Charles River Skatepark
site last week where he and Renata, the CRC President, discussed plans for the
skatepark. (See Boston Herald, "Hub rolls out plan for $1.1M skateboard
park" by Jessica Heslam, 8/17/04.) Later that day, they met with Mayor Menino
who pledged his support for the skatepark.
