Programs and Projects
Halfpipe to Heaven
Thanks to all who joined us at "Halfpipe to Heaven" on October 21st.
Mark Maloney, Director of the Boston Redevelopment Agency, was on hand to announce
a $100,000 gift to the Charles River Skatepark from the City of Boston. Other
speakers included State Senator Jarrett Barrios; Martha King of the Department
of Conservation and Recreation; Cambridge Mayor Michael Sullivan; and former Lt.
Governor Thomas O'Neill. The Eastern Boarder skateboard team wowed the crowd with
aerial action on our demonstration half-pipe. If you missed the event but would
like to support the Charles River Skatepark you can donate online.
Weeks Bridge Happenings
Conservancy Volunteers and the Northeastern
University chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently completed
an erosion mitigation project on the Cambridge banks of the Weeks Bridge. Head
down to the bridge for an autumn stroll and check out their handiwork!
Advocacy
2006 EOEA Budget
The Commonwealth's Executive Office of Environmental Affairs is preparing its
budget for the 2006 Fiscal Year. Conservancy staff testified in budget hearings
on October 27th focusing on restoring the pathways and extending the historic
parkway initiative upriver.
DCR Restructuring Plan - Let your thoughts be known!
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is restructuring
to create a more efficient and effective parklands agency. The DCR seeks community
input. Review the restructuring
document and send your comments to DCR.Partners@state.ma.us
or call (617) 626-4973.
Swim for the Charles River
On November 12th, Christopher Swain will reach the Boston Harbor, completing his
80 mile swim down the Charles River. Christopher, who navigated the Hudson River
earlier this year, is swimming to show support for the Clean Charles 2005 Initiative-an
alliance of government agencies, institutions and community-based organizations
working toward a swimmable Charles River by 2005. To learn more, visit the Swim
for Clean Water website.
