CHARLES  RIVER  PARKLANDS  UPDATE
January 2005
Archives—Table of Contents

The Conservancy is recruiting a part-time Chief Operating Officer!

We are looking for a seasoned executive who will take our young, innovative organization and create an institution. Do you know somebody with solid fiscal and managerial expertise (perhaps from the private sector) who would like to crown his or her career with this opportunity to transform the Charles River Parklands into a world-class "democratic common ground"? Learn more about the COO opportunity. Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to crc@thecharles.org by February 1st.

Programs and Projects

Service Learning Program receives $20,000 grant!
Thanks to a generous $20,000 grant from the Boston Foundation, the Conservancy will expand its service learning program this spring. Under the supervision of the CRC volunteer coordinator, Evan Moss, youth will learn about ecology, landscape design, local history and parkland stewardship while performing community service projects. If you are interested in learning more about this program, contact Evan by email at edm@thecharles.org or by phone at the CRC office (see column to the left).

Conservancy Volunteers

It's tree pruning time with the Conservancy! Learn the basics while enjoying the Parklands. Your work will ensure healthy trees come springtime. Click on the following link to see volunteer dates and times. The Conservancy Volunteers spring schedule is filling up fast—now is the time to set up a service day for your group. Contact Evan Moss by email at edm@thecharles.org or by phone at the CRC office (see number in column to the left).

Conservancy Volunteers Special Event
Learn tree pruning from a pro! Melissa Levangie from Trees New England will lead a tree pruning clinic with Evan Moss where they will explain the importance of pruning as well as specific pruning techniques. Contact Evan Moss to sign up by email at edm@thecharles.org or by phone at the CRC office (see number in column to the left).

Young Athletes Raise Funds for Skatepark

An ongoing series of rock concerts is helping to raise money for the world-class skatepark on the Charles River Parklands. Recent events have included bands like Gang Green, Concrete Facelift and Shanghai Valentine. Information about upcoming concerts will be posted on the skatepark webpage on a regular basis.

CRC Five Year Anniversary—2005

Planning is underway for the Conservancy's 5th Anniversary Celebratory Luncheon in June 2005. If you're interested in helping make this event an unforgettable experience, email crc@thecharles.org.

Parklands Leases and Public Access Increased

Beginning this year, boathouses and yacht clubs will pay greater fees. This change will increase state revenue by approximately $222,000 per year. In addition, boathouses and yacht clubs will be required to provide more public access as well as stewardship for the parklands.

The Conservancy would like to acknowledge the Conservation Law Foundation for their important help on increasing public access to the riverbanks.

CRC Annual Appeal

For those of you who have already given to the recent annual appeal, thank you, we greatly appreciate your commitment. Your investment strengthens the Conservancy's ability to renew and steward the Charles River Parklands. If you haven't given yet, please consider supporting the Conservancy.

You can donate online or send a check to our mailing address, shown. in the column to the left.

Thank You!

Having a 6'10" volunteer makes pruning a snap and was very helpful in getting into the lower reaches of the tree's crown at a recent event in Herter Park.

If you have a picture you'd like to submit for a future picture of the month, please contact us at crc@thecharles.org.
