CHARLES RIVER PARKLANDS
UPDATE Skatepark UpdateThe Charles River Skatepark recently reached the 1 million mark in its fundraising. We will be launching a new website dedicated solely to the skatepark in early August to better organize and inform everyone involved and interested in the skatepark. Also in August, we will be kicking off a “Buy-A-Brick campaign” to help complete the fundraising needed to reach the 2.1 million goal. You can still support the CRC’s efforts by purchasing a Charles River Skatepark sneaker. $10 from every sale goes towards the skatepark. The sneakers are available at Underground Snowboard (behind Ski Market on Commonwealth Avenue) and online at Eastern Boarder. To learn more about the skatepark and to donate to this exciting project, please visit our Charles River Skatepark section. Charles River Swim RaceOn September 9th, the Charles River Swimming Club will host the Charles River One Mile Swim. It will be the first ever open water swim race on the Charles River. The course is a one mile loop between the Harvard Bridge and the Longfellow Bridge. The race will begin at 8am with a water start. The event is intended to raise awareness of efforts to improve water quality, as well as to make recreational swimming in the Charles a possibility for the future. To register for the race or for more information, please contact the Charles River Swimming Club at raceinfo@charlesriverswimmingclub.org. RiverSing 2006Mark your calendars! RiverSing 2006 has been scheduled for Thursday, September 21st from 6:00-7:30 PM. Join us, along with Revels, and invite your family and friends to welcome the beginning of autumn with singing and celebration at the Weeks Bridge. This year the Conservancy plans to permanently illuminate the Western Avenue Bridge. Click on the following link to see pictures of RiverSing 2005. We are still looking for sponsors for this event. Please contact Jennifer Chu at jyc@thecharles.org for more details. Conservancy Happenings in July 2006The CRC hosted a volunteer recognition event on June 29th at the Publick Theater in Brighton to recognize some of the 6,000 people who have taken part in CRC projects since 2002. The event was hosted by longtime WBZ-TV meteorologist Bruce Schwoegler, with awards presented by State Senator Jarrett Barrios and the CRC’s Stewardship Manager, Evan Moss. Volunteers from Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Winthrop, Watertown, and Newton were given Distinguished Service Awards for their participation in both individual and group categories. To sign up to volunteer or to arrange an event, contact Evan Moss at edm@thecharles.org. Membership MailingA few weeks ago we sent out our spring letter. This mailing contains a complimentary watercolor note card and a mini poster. If you did not receive it or you know somebody else who would like to, please send us the contact information at crc@thecharles.org. If you have already sent in your donation, thank you for your support of the Charles River Parklands. The Charles River Conservancy takes as its mission the renewal and stewardship of the Charles River Parklands and their surroundings, particularly parks, parkways and bridges. The Conservancy engages in numerous Parklands restoration and improvement initiatives, including access and safety, education and outreach, and planning and maintenance programs, and relies heavily on individual contributions.
