Archives—Table of Contents

Advocating for Sunday bike rides on Storrow Drive

On October 8th, The Boston Sunday Globe published a letter by Conservancy president Renata von Tscharner praising the DCR for closing Storrow Drive to cars and allowing Hub on Wheels City Wide Ride to enjoy use of the road. She also advocates towards making this a permanent Sunday morning opportunity. To read her letter, click here.

Conservancy Volunteers Making a Difference

Many thanks to The Winsor School, College of Wooster Alumni, Tufts Health Plan, the Asher House, Y.A.V.A., The Beacon Academy, and Entercom, all of whom volunteered in October.

We also welcome aboard John Broderick, hired as Stewardship Program Assistant to help run the ever-growing program, and look forward to ending the month with more shoreline restoration and invasive species removal with The Excel Charter School, Northeastern University, Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, MIT Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Chi chapter, MIT Tech Catholic Community and Showa Boston.

If you would like to schedule an event for your school, company, or organization, please contact our Stewardship Program Manager, Evan Moss at elm@thecharles.org or the telephone number shown in the column to the left.

New Lights on the Water

Western Ave Bridge illuminatedThe Western Avenue Bridge that spans the Charles is now permanently illuminated at night. This is the third bridge that John Powell brought to light as part of the yearly RiverSing celebration. To view a larger version of this picture, click here.

Skatepark Update

Things continue to progress in our plans for the new skatepark, with fundraising levels now up to $1.18 million towards the goal of $2.3m. Help is coming from many quarters, including U.S. Senator John Kerry, who recently wrote a letter in support of the skatepark. To read this letter, click here.

We also have a new ten minute film on the skatepark that is available for viewing on our website. The video includes interviews with designer Zach Wormhoudt and Carolyn Lynch of the Peter and Carolyn Lynch Foundation. Click here to see it.

Many events are planned for the upcoming month, including skateboarding demonstrations, concerts, and work with young athletes to help clean up other skateparks. To learn more about these opportunities to get involved, please click here.

The CRC on CCTV: RiverSing Recapped

Relive an exciting evening of song, dance, and Revels! The Conservancy has a regular television talk show on Channel 9 (Cambridge only), and on Wednesday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. you can see a preview of the film assemblage on Riversing by Charles Mann. The film will be re-aired the same night at 12:30 a.m.
