CHARLES RIVER PARKLANDS
UPDATE Conservancy Given Grant to Hire Swim CoordinatorThe Charles River Conservancy was recently awarded a grant of $45,000 from the Boston Foundation to hire a coordinator for its “Swimming in the Charles” initiative. The citizens of Massachusetts have invested millions in tax dollars towards cleaning the Charles, and the grant is an important step towards reaping the many benefits of such an investment, including enjoying the first swimmable urban river in America. For more information and a complete job description for the Swimming Coordinator, please click here. Skatepark Fundraising TieThanks to several recent gifts skatepark fundraising has now reached $1.25 million. You, too, can help this effort: “Tie one on for the Charles River Skatepark” with our new Skatepark tie. These and other skatepark gifts can be viewed and ordered by clicking here. Conservancy Volunteers Making a DifferenceWe would like to thank the volunteers who came out for our January tree pruning events, including the Riverside Boat Club, Conservancy Volunteers, and the Single Volunteers of Boston. The Conservancy Volunteers will continue our work winter-long with tree pruning. And remember, it’s not too early to schedule an event for this spring! If you would like to schedule an event for your school, company, or organization please contact Evan Moss, our Stewardship Manager, at elm@thecharles.org or the telephone number shown in the column to the left. The CRC on CCTVLandscape architect Catherine Melina will be joining Renata von Tscharner on January 24th at 5.30 pm (repeated at 12:30 am) on the Conservancy’s television program (CCTV, channel 9 Cambridge only). They will discuss the Conservancy’s project to revitalize and landscape the Eliot Bridge Abutments on the Boston side of the river. The Charles River Conservancy takes as its mission the renewal and stewardship of the Charles River Parklands and their surroundings, particularly parks, parkways and bridges. The Conservancy engages in numerous Parklands restoration and improvement initiatives, including access and safety, education and outreach, and planning and maintenance programs, and relies heavily on individual contributions.
