Parklands Bring Economic Benefits to the Commonwealth

The Conservation and Recreation Campaign has recently released a report about how public lands contribute to the economy and quality of life. This report, titled “Parks and Beaches: Common Cents for the Commonwealth” suggests that for every dollar invested in DCR parks and beaches, $26 are returned to the Massachusetts economy. This article includes interviews with Paul Fremont-Smith, a member of the US Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation and local skateboarders. The Newton Tab published a piece entitled, “Improving our parklands – a democratic tradition.” It discusses the role of the DCR Stewardship council and stresses the importance of citizen responsibility in maintaining and improving our park system. To read this article, please click here.

Disappointing Budget for Parks

Due to a budget gap of $1 billion dollars, Governor Patrick could not deliver on his promise to spend an extra $10 million to fix Massachusetts parks. Accounting for inflation, this year’s FY 2008 environmental budget of $211,654,688 has hardly changed from last year’s figure. The Governor’s proposed budget shows only an extra $740,000 to be spent for parks. To read more on this issue in The Boston Globe, please click here.
