Young Skateboarders Will Help Design a World-Class Skatepark For Boston
21 May 2003
The Charles River Conservancy (CRC), a non-profit organization dedicated to
the stewardship and renewal of the Charles River Parklands, will hold a meeting
of Greater Boston's young skateboarders as they discuss plans for the potential
skatepark to be built in the vicinity of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge.
Since the idea's initial proposal in 1999, the CRC has advocated for the skatepark,
raising funding, organizing meetings, and conducting research on skateparks in
order to see this part of the Charles River come to life. With the help and support
of many local politicians, state agencies, skate shops, community groups, and
local citizens, this project is really taking off.
To ensure that the park is something skaters will use, the CRC is organizing
this first meeting in a series of design discussions. Local skaters will meet
with architects and skatepark designers and offer their opinions as to what elements
they'd like to see in their park.
Sponsored by grants from the Boston Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation,
this meeting will be held June 5th at the Boston Public Library (conference room #4)
from 6:00-8:00 pm. In attendance will be local professional skateboarder Vanik
Hacobian and skatepark designer Jamie MacDonald of New England Skateparks.
