Charles River Skatepark
Project Information
Tens of thousands of young athletes in the greater Boston area skateboard, inline skate, and BMX bike and currently have only small facilities that are inaccessible by public transportation. And, it is illegal to skateboard in public spaces in Cambridge, Boston, and other surrounding communities; many young skateboarders have had their boards confiscated and have been fined hundreds of dollars. They are not bad kids; they just do not have a dedicated place to skate.
This skatepark will provide a venue for physical activity, something that is laudable when many young people suffer from inactivity and are overweight. It will also provide a centralized facility for community building within the skating and biking population of greater Boston.
Many public facilities exist for other sports – like soccer, baseball, and hockey – but not for the rapidly growing sports of skateboarding, inline skating, and BMX biking. Construction of a world class public skatepark will provide a legitimate venue where these young athletes can practice and compete without breaking the law.
